Chefs for Shelterhouse Raises Funds for Domestic Violence Survivors
The annual Chefs for Shelterhouse event attracted around 250 attendees who sampled dishes from 19 local restaurants at the Great Hall in Midland. The fundraiser supports Shelterhouse of Midland and Gladwin counties, an organization dedicated to assisting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault through safety, shelter, counseling, and advocacy. Executive Director Ellen Lynch and Outreach Coordinator Lizzy Kennedy emphasized the community’s continued support and the growing needs of Shelterhouse, noting a 29% increase in shelter turnaways and substantial increases in both client services and forensic exams over the past year. With over 922 individuals served between October 2023 and September 2024, Shelterhouse struggles with limited shelter capacity and a lack of affordable housing, making long-term recovery more challenging for survivors.
