Societys Future Behind Bars

It's disheartening to take a look inside the criminal justice system and see society's future behind bars.

Even at casual glance it's obvious that, more and more, the perpetrators of violent crimes are still in elementary school. Kids going from kindergarten to jail cells have become a horrifying reality.

Today, teenagers make up the majority of those charged with violent crimes like rape, murder and armed robbery. Youth violence is on the rise and the children charged with violent crimes represent an entire generation of lost youth languishing away in the criminal justice system.

With so many young people in jail, it’s a wonder our educational system isn't administered out of jail houses instead of schoolhouses.

When it comes to violence, EVERYONE'S A VICTIM, whether it’s the abused child who becomes a child abuser or the mugging victim who becomes a vigilante -- regardless of who or how, the cycle of violence is perpetuated.

When children are consistently being bombarded by glorified depictions of violence in the media, the images are internalized and the behavior becomes acceptable. Now, with the prevalence of guns in our society, and a generation of young people being raised by television, our children don't stand a chance.

Children who commit violent acts against others are nothing more than victims themselves. Of those children who aren't killed on the streets, the rest are arrested and sent to jail. In jail, these child criminals are subjected to rapes, assaults and even murders. Those who survive jail are often unable to function properly in society because they lack socialization skills or they are considered to be nothing more than ex-convicts in society's eyes. With nowhere else to turn, these kids are soon sucked back into the downward spiraling cycle of crime, violence and self-destruction.

The cycle of violence must be broken or the list of casualties will never stop growing. Are you or your loved one next?

If everyone joins in the fight against violence, another mother won't have to cry, and another child won't have to die.
